Early life and background

Manoj Kumar Tiwary was born on 14 November 1985 in Howrah, West Bengal. Raised in a family that includes his father Shyam Shankar Tiwary (deceased), his mother Bina Tiwary and a brother Rajkumar Tiwary, Tiwary grew up in the same region he later represented in domestic cricket and politics. He is commonly known by the nickname "Manni." Physically, he stands around 1.73 m (5'8") and has been described as a lean athlete with dark brown eyes and black hair.

Cricket career

Tiwary emerged as a right-handed batsman who bowls right-arm leg-break. His style on the field has been characterized as aggressive, with an ability to take the attack to bowlers by coming down the pitch. That approach helped him earn selection to India’s national side. He made his One Day International debut on 3 February 2008 against Australia in Brisbane and played his first Twenty20 international on 29 October 2011 versus England in Kolkata. His last recorded ODI appearance in the licensed material was on 14 July 2015 against Zimbabwe at Harare Sports Club, and his last T20 international appearance listed was on 11 September 2012 against New Zealand at MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Across domestic and franchise cricket, Tiwary has represented Bengal and played in the Indian Premier League and other leagues for teams including Delhi Daredevils, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rising Pune Supergiants and Abahani Limited. He wore the India jersey number 9 when selected for the national side. Several auction and transfer details from his IPL career are noted in the record: he was bought by Delhi Daredevils in the early IPL seasons, later joined Kolkata Knight Riders (including an exchange that involved Moises Henriques), was signed and retained by KKR in subsequent seasons, and in 2017 was acquired by Rising Pune Supergiants.

Notable performances and playing record

One of Tiwary’s standout international innings came in the 2011–12 ODI series against the West Indies, when he scored his maiden ODI century. Coming into a precarious situation early in the innings, he compiled an unbeaten 104 in a single outing that concluded with him leaving the field because of severe cramping. In a separate match against Sri Lanka in 2012 he contributed significantly as a bowler by taking four wickets while conceding 61 runs in his ten overs and also contributed with the bat in that game.

Throughout his career he has faced injury interruptions; on the day he was due to make an earlier debut in 2007 he injured his shoulder in practice and was ruled out of that series. Injuries and fitness concerns are noted as factors that affected his availability at times.

Retirement

On 3 August 2023, Tiwary announced his retirement from all forms of cricket.

Shortly after the election, on 10 May 2021, he took the oath as Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports in the Government of West Bengal.
