Marco Jansen (Cricketer) Biography

South African left-arm fast bowler and useful lower-order batter known for his height and pace. Marco Jansen has represented North West domestically and is

Early life and background

Marco Jansen was born on 1 May 2000 in Klerksdorp, South Africa. He grew up in a sporting family: his father, Jacobus Jansen, played rugby union for the Free State Cheetahs and spotted his sons’ cricketing promise at a young age. Marco has a twin brother, Duan, and two sisters, Leandri and Bianca. He attended Laerskool Goudkop and developed an early affinity for cricket; a standout school innings at under-nine level convinced his father to invest in their training.

Marco is exceptionally tall for a cricketer, standing about 203 cm (6 ft 8 in). His height and athleticism helped him develop into a left-arm fast bowler who can regularly bowl around 140–142 kph. He bats right-handed and is regarded as a genuine all-round prospect.

Career

Marco made his List A debut for North West in the 2017–18 CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge and followed that with a first-class debut on 11 October 2018 in the 2018–19 CSA 3-Day Provincial Cup. In the 2018–19 first-class campaign he emerged as a standout performer for North West, finishing among the leading wicket-takers with 27 wickets in six matches.

Across his early domestic career he built encouraging statistics: in first-class cricket he played 12 matches and took 52 wickets at an average of 20.51 with a strike rate of 37.8, while in List A fixtures he appeared in 13 matches and claimed 16 wickets. Those performances earned him selection to South Africa’s Under-19 squad for a tour of India in January 2019 and a later call-up to the senior South African squad touring Pakistan, although he did not make a Test debut on that tour.

Franchise cricket and IPL

Marco’s combination of height, pace and batting ability attracted attention from franchise scouts. He was bought by the Mumbai Indians at the IPL auction for a base price of 20 lakhs INR. Upon signing, he became the tallest player in IPL history. Mumbai Indians’ cricket leadership and ownership noted the club had been tracking him and viewed him as a raw talent with significant upside.

He made his Indian Premier League debut for Mumbai Indians against Royal Challengers Bangalore at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium. After a challenging first over in which he conceded 13 runs, he recovered strongly and finished with figures of 2–28 from four overs, claiming the wickets of Glenn Maxwell and Shahbaz Ahmed. That debut attracted praise from within the cricket community.

Playing style and development

Marco is a left-arm quick who can generate good pace and bounce due to his height. He is also capable with the bat lower down the order, giving his teams an all-round option. Early in his career he spent time as a net bowler to visiting teams, including India A, where he bowled to several notable batsmen and worked under the observation of coaches such as Rahul Dravid. His twin brother Duan has also featured in the domestic circuit alongside him.

Public profile

Marco keeps a profile as a South African international prospect and rising franchise performer. He has been associated with domestic sides and franchises including North West, Knights, Warriors and Mumbai Indians. He lists golfing among his hobbies and has cited Virat Kohli and Mitchell Johnson among his favourite cricketers.

Family and personal life

Marco is unmarried. His parents are Jacobus Jansen and Erna Pretorius. He has a twin brother, Duan, and two sisters. His family has been a visible part of his early cricketing journey, supporting his development from school-level standout to professional cricketer.
