Early life and background

Nikhil Chaudhary was born on 4 May 1996 in Delhi and spent his childhood after an early move with his family to Punjab. He grew up in Ludhiana and began playing cricket at around age ten. Chaudhary’s early ambitions included becoming a fast bowler, inspired by Brett Lee, but he later transitioned through off-spin before settling into leg-spin and an all-round role.

He comes from a family that relocated to Punjab when he was young. His father is Saneh Kumar Chaudhary, noted in public records as a businessman. He has two sisters, Pooja and Aarti Deepak Anand, the latter described as a nutritionist. Chaudhary is unmarried.

Career

Chaudhary developed through Punjab’s youth system, featuring prominently in under-19 and under-23 competitions. He recorded strong U-19 and U-23 performances, including a prolific 272-run innings in an under-19 match between Ludhiana and Amritsar and a notable Col. CK Naidu Trophy U23 season where he scored 500 runs across seven matches. He played for Punjab in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and made his Twenty20 debut for Punjab in the Inter-State Twenty-20 Tournament on 29 January 2017 against Haryana. He also made his List-A debut for Punjab in 2017.

Trained under established Indian players in Punjab, Chaudhary worked with Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh during his development. In 2019 he trialed with Mumbai Indians for the Indian Premier League but was not selected.

A visit to Australia led to a longer stay: Chaudhary was in Brisbane when the COVID-19 lockdowns began in 2020 and took on work outside cricket while continuing to play. He featured in Brisbane grade cricket for Northern Suburbs, attracting attention for his batting. He also had a brief opportunity as a COVID-19 replacement player for the Brisbane Heat.

His performances in Queensland grade cricket opened doors to the Big Bash League. For the 2023–24 BBL season Chaudhary was signed by the Hobart Hurricanes, becoming one of the few Indian cricketers to appear in the competition for the franchise. In his BBL debut on 20 December 2023 against the Perth Scorchers he made an attacking 40 off 31 balls, striking a six off Haris Rauf before being dismissed by left-arm quick Jason Behrendorff. He continued to contribute with the ball and took two wickets against Sydney Thunder on 1 January 2024.

Chaudhary has also shown big-hitting capacity in practice and trial matches, including clearing two sixes in an over off Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan in a trial and expressing ambitions to face and bowl to top international players. He wears jersey number 4 in the BBL, bats right-handed and bowls right-arm off-break, and has been coached by Charanjeet Singh Pangu in his domestic career.

Standing around 1.83 m (6 feet) and listed at about 80 kg, Chaudhary carries distinctive tattoos on both forearms and his right bicep; one tattoo features the phrase "Har Maidan Fateh" in Gurmukhi.
