Parul Chaudhary (Athlete) Biography
Indian long-distance runner Parul Chaudhary Jhajj rose from a village in Meerut to become a national record-holder and Asian Games gold medallist, knownfor
Early life and backgroundParul Chaudhary Jhajj was born on 15 April 1995 in Ikaluta village, near Meerut. Raised in a farming family, her father Kishanlal Chaudhary and mother Rajesh Devi supported her from an early age. Parul grew up alongside siblings who were active in sport: an elder sister, Preeti, who ran middle-distance events and later joined the CISF, and two brothers, Rahul and Rohit. Parul has described how a simple suggestion from her father to enter a school race set her on the path to athletics. As a child she ran frequently around the village and in sugarcane fields, often training barefoot and competing in school races without formal preparation.
Career
Parul moved through the middle-distance ranks—starting with 800 metres and progressing to 1500m and 3000m—before settling on longer distances where she found the most success. She took a job with Western Railways in 2015, working as a ticket examiner at Grant Road station in Mumbai. Encouraged by senior figures in the railways sports community, she continued to pursue competitive running and began to make her mark nationally and internationally.
On the Asian stage Parul has been a consistent performer. She won bronze in the 5000 metres at the 2019 Asian Athletics Championships in Doha. In 2022 she set a national record in the 3000 metres at the Sunset Tour in Los Angeles, lowering the previous mark to 8:57.19. That same year at the Asian Games in Hangzhou she won gold in the 5000 metres and silver in the 3000 metres steeplechase.
Parul continued to improve her steeplechase credentials into 2023. At the USATF Los Angeles Grand Prix in May she recorded a personal best of 9:29.51. In July she won the Asian Athletics Championships 3000 metres in Bangkok with a time of 9:38.76. A major breakthrough came at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest in August 2023, when she produced a national record and personal best of 9:15.31 in the 3000m steeplechase; that performance secured her qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
She trains at a base in Colorado Springs and has worked with coach Scott Simmons. Over her career she has been a multiple-time national champion and has twice finished among the top eight at Asian Championships. Her domestic success includes five national titles.
Public profile
Parul’s journey has often been framed against the expectations of her village upbringing. She has spoken about how, had she remained in the village, early marriage would likely have been expected of her. Family members recall locals offering criticism when the sisters trained and competed in shorts, but their parents continued to back their athletic pursuits. Parul’s early transformation from a chubby child to a competitive runner has been noted by her mother as a visible change brought about by training.
Awards and recognition have followed her competitive achievements. She received the Rani Laxmibai Award in 2020 and was honored with the Arjuna Award in January 2024.
Latest updates
Parul’s national record in the 3000m steeplechase from Budapest in August 2023 qualified her for the Paris 2024 Olympics. In 2023 she also earned medals at the Asian Athletics Championships (gold in 3000m and silver in 5000m) and continued to lower her personal bests across events. Her performances at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games—gold in the 5000m and silver in the 3000m steeplechase—remain key highlights of her recent competitive history.
Personal notes
Parul is listed as 170 cm tall (1.70 m, 5 ft 7 in), with brown eyes and black hair. She identifies as unmarried and is associated with the Jhajj gotra. Beyond athletics she has combined sport with employment in the railways, a position she initially took for job security and which ultimately supported her development into an international athlete.
