Prachi Choudhary (Athlete) Biography
Indian middle-distance runner Prachi Choudhary Kaliyar rose from Saharanpur to represent India in international competitions, earning medals in national,国际
Early life and backgroundPrachi Choudhary Kaliyar was born on 10 May 1997 in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh. Raised in a farming family, her father is Jaiveer Singh and her mother is Rajesh. She has two younger brothers, including one named Pranshu Kaliyar, and an elder sister who works with the Uttar Pradesh Police. Prachi completed her schooling at Janta Inter College in Saharanpur and later moved to Patiala for higher education and athletic training, studying at Mohindra College of Punjabi University and obtaining a Bachelor of Physical Education.
Career
Prachi began competing in athletics in 2014 and developed into a middle-distance specialist, focusing on events such as the 400m and 800m. Early national success included a silver medal in the 400m at the 58th National Open Athletics Championships in 2018. That same year she recorded a 400m time of 52.96 seconds at the Guwahati Inter State Championships.
In 2019 Prachi’s season included a mix of international and national appearances. At the 14th International Railway Athletics Championship in the Czech Republic she won gold in the 400m, gold in the 4 × 100m relay, and silver in the 800m. She was also part of the Indian contingent that won a silver medal at the 23rd Asian Athletics Championships in Doha.
Prachi’s career faced a disruption following a positive test for an anabolic steroid metabolite after a competition in Patiala in December 2019. The National Anti-Doping Agency provisionally suspended her and she initially faced a four-year ban. On appeal, the Anti-Doping Appeals Panel concluded the violation was unintentional because the source of the prohibited substance could not be established, and her period of ineligibility was reduced to two years. She was then eligible to return to competition in December 2021.
Upon her return Prachi continued to compete and improve. In 2022 her season-best was recorded as 55.64 seconds. In 2023 she achieved significant results on the domestic circuit: she earned a silver medal at the 62nd National Inter State Senior Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar and finished the 400m in 53.65 seconds at the 2023 Indian Championships, the third-best time at that meet.
A highlight of Prachi’s 2023 season was at the All-India Railway Athletics Championships in Raebareli, where she set a new personal best of 52.40 seconds in the 400m. That time broke a longstanding championship mark of 52.54 seconds set in 1998 and earned her a gold medal.
Internationally, Prachi was a member of the Indian women’s 4 × 400m relay team that won a silver medal at the 2022 Asian Games. The quartet included Vithya Ramraj, Subha Venkatesan, Aishwarya Kailash Mishra, and Prachi herself.
Public profile
Prachi has spoken in interviews about the financial challenges her family faced while she pursued athletics. Her father supported her training and equipment needs, at times borrowing money so she could have proper spike shoes and nutrition. In 2019 she began working with Indian Railways in Patiala, balancing an eight-hour daily job with continued preparation for national and international competitions.
Her path has also involved disputes with selection authorities. Prachi was not permitted to compete at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games because she was not part of the national training camp; she contested that decision through the courts and ultimately appealed to the Supreme Court, which upheld the Athletics Federation of India’s selection policy.
Latest updates
In 2023 Prachi consolidated her comeback from the earlier suspension by posting a personal best of 52.40 seconds at the All-India Railway Athletics Championships and contributing to India’s silver medal in the women’s 4 × 400m relay at the 2022 Asian Games. She remains unmarried and continues to represent Indian athletics on the national and international stage.
