Praveen Kumar (Para Athlete) Biography

Praveen Kumar is an Indian para high jumper from Govindgarh village in Gautam Budh Nagar, Uttar Pradesh. Born in 2003, he rose from modest beginnings to an

Early life and background

Praveen Kumar was born on 15 May 2003 in Govindgarh village, Jewar tehsil, in Gautam Budh Nagar district, Uttar Pradesh. Raised in a farming family, his parents are Amarpal Singh and Nirdosh Devi. From infancy he had a congenital impairment in his left leg, yet he remained active as a child, playing and running with family and friends. He attended Pragyan Public School in Jewar and later studied at Motilal Nehru College in New Delhi, where he pursued a Bachelor of Arts degree.

As a youngster he discovered a love for sports, enjoying cricket and volleyball. In class 9 he wanted to try high jump and long jump, and after some resistance from a teacher his father intervened and Praveen was allowed to compete. He won that school high jump and the teacher began giving him basic coaching. With limited local facilities, he improvised a sand pit in his village to practise and went on to represent his school in district, state and national CBSE competitions.

Career

Praveen transitioned into para athletics after learning about para-sport events in 2018. Competing in para competitions led to a meeting with coach Dr. Satyapal Singh at an event in Ghaziabad. Impressed by his ability, the coach invited Praveen to Delhi, arranged a place for him to stay, and trained him at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium for roughly four years.

He competes in men's high jump events classified as T64 and T44. His competitive résumé includes a gold at the 20th National Federation Cup Juniors (U20) in 2022, a bronze at the 2023 World Para Athletics Meet, a bronze at the 2023 World Para Championships, a silver at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, and a medal at the 2024 Paris Paralympics in Men's High Jump T44. At the 2023 Asian Games he set a notable mark of 2.02 metres in the men's high jump T64.

Praveen has trained through setbacks, including continuing to practise while recovering from COVID-19 in 2020. He is coached by Satyapal Singh and receives support from the sports NGO Olympic Gold Quest. To maintain competitive fitness he follows a regular gym routine in addition to track practice.

Public profile

Praveen has been recognised nationally for his sporting achievements. He received the Arjuna Award in 2023. Subsequent honours listed include the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award in 2025 and the Padma Shri in 2026. After his medal success at the Tokyo Paralympics, political representatives pledged to develop a stadium named in his honour in his native Jewar.

He is unmarried and identifies as Hindu. His family includes an elder brother preparing for civil services and a younger sister named Priya. Praveen uses Instagram as a public social media presence.

Latest updates

Praveen is listed among India’s top para high jumpers, with continued international appearances through 2024 and honours that reflect his rapid rise in the sport. His training base in Delhi and backing from a national coach and NGO remain key parts of his preparation. He continues to travel in his leisure time and participates in public felicitation events.
