Early life and background

Riya Shukla was born on 1 January 2000 in Indranagar, Lucknow. She grew up in Lucknow and received early formal training in classical music and the Kathak dance form at Prayag Sangeet Samiti in Allahabad, beginning that instruction when she was three years old. She attended M K S D Inter College in Lucknow and later completed a college graduation.

Her family includes her father, Sushil Kumar Shukla, who has worked at Vidhan Bhawan in Lucknow, and her mother, Madhuri Shukla. She has multiple siblings, including two older and one younger sibling. She is unmarried.

Career

Riya’s public career began on children’s talent television. In 2012 she took part as a contestant on the TV talent show Hindustan Ke Hunarbaaz, and she later appeared on the dance reality program Dance India Dance. Those early television appearances built on her classical training and helped launch her into film and commercial work.

In 2015 and 2016 she performed small roles in Bollywood films, including Tanu Weds Manu Returns and San 75 Pachattar. Her breakthrough role came in 2016 when she auditioned in Lucknow and was cast as Apeksha “Apu” Shivlal Sahay in the feature film Nil Battey Sannata. For her performance in that film she received the Star Screen Best Child Artist Award in 2016. On Nil Battey Sannata she worked under the direction of Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari; the production arranged for a tutor so she could continue her studies while filming.

Beyond Nil Battey Sannata, Riya expanded her screen work with parts in Hichki (2018) and the film 3rd Eye (2019). She has also performed behind the camera as an art director on the 2017 short film Butterflies and Hurricanes, directed by Savvas Christou.

On television, Riya made her acting debut in a lead part with the serial Naati Pinky Ki Lambi Love Story, which premiered on 27 January 2020. She played the title role of Pinky opposite Puneett Chouksey. Riya has described the opportunity to join that show as an unexpected but welcome turning point in her life, noting that it came while she was at home in Lucknow and that her family is proud of her achievements.

In addition to film and television, she has appeared in a number of television commercials, including campaigns for Ted Talk Nayi Soch and Whisper Ultra.
