As a boy he developed an early interest in the sport and at about age 11 joined the Chitwan Cricket Academy in Narayangarh, where he trained under coach Raju Khadka.

Lamichhane’s upbringing included time living in Haryana, India, during which he spent several formative years and began playing cricket regularly. He is the son of Chander Narayan Lamichhane, who worked for the Indian Railways, and he has at least two siblings: an elder brother, Mohan Lamichhane, and a sister, Indu Lamichhane Neupane.

Career

A right-handed lower-order batter and a legbreak googly bowler, Lamichhane came to wider attention through his performances in age-group internationals. At the 2016 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup he claimed a hat-trick and finished among the tournament’s leading wicket-takers, achievements that are widely regarded as a turning point in his career.

Following his under-19 exploits, Lamichhane earned opportunities to play franchise and domestic cricket abroad. He took part in the inaugural Hong Kong T20 Blitz representing Kowloon Cantons, and his play there led Australian former captain Michael Clarke to support his development, including sponsoring a tour with the Michael Clarke Cricket Academy. Lamichhane has also played Australian Grade Cricket in Sydney.

On the domestic and franchise circuit, he has been associated with teams including Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League, Kowloon Cantons, Biratnagar Kings, Western Suburbs District Cricket Club, Lalitpur Patriots, and the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. In 2018 he became the first Nepali to be selected for the Caribbean Premier League and was the first Nepali cricketer to play in the Indian Premier League after being bought by Delhi Daredevils in the 2018 auction.

Lamichhane made his List A international debut for Nepal on 8 February 2018 against Namibia in Windhoek. In that match he took four wickets for 18 runs and was named Man of the Match. He has been coached and mentored by figures such as Pubudu Dassanayake and Raju Khadka, and his bowling has earned him nicknames that reference his leg-spin craft, reflecting comparisons with world-class wrist spinners.

Records and recognition

Early in his career Lamichhane set records at youth level, including the under-19 World Cup hat-trick in 2016 and finishing among the tournament’s top wicket-takers. He was Nepal’s leading wicket-taker at that event, with 14 wickets in six matches. In 2017 he received the NNIPA Award for Best Youth Player of the Year, and in 2018 the International Cricket Council named him among the top 10 players of the Cricket World Cup Qualifier tournament.
