Early life and backgroundRamsingh Sanjay Yadav was born on 10 May 1995 in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, and grew up in Hosur, Tamil Nadu. Raised in a family led by his father, Ram Singh Yadav, and mother, Maya Devi, Sanjay is the eldest among siblings that include his brother Sonu Yadav. He attended Maharishi Vidya Mandir and R V Govt Boys High Sec School in Hosur before moving on to Loyola College in Chennai, where he completed a BSc in Statistics.
Sanjay began playing tennis-ball cricket as a child and took part in local tournaments around Chennai. He was spotted by coach M. Premnath of the Future India Cricket Academy during a school match and joined the academy in Hosur. Financial constraints briefly interrupted his training, but his coach encouraged him to continue without fees, allowing him to develop his game.
Career
Sanjay Yadav is a left-handed batsman and a slow left-arm orthodox bowler who has represented multiple domestic teams. Early in his senior career he made his debut for Tamil Nadu on 3 February 2017 in the South Zone Inter-State T20 Tournament. That same year he broke into the Tamil Nadu Premier League with VB Kanchi Veerans, where impressive performances in his debut TNPL season helped raise his profile.
Ahead of the 2017 Indian Premier League, Kolkata Knight Riders signed him on a contract reportedly worth Rs 10 lakh. He did not play a match in that IPL season, but practicing alongside experienced international players contributed to his development.
Unable to secure a place in Tamil Nadu’s first-class side because of strong competition among spin-bowling all-rounders, Sanjay accepted opportunities elsewhere and played as a guest player for Meghalaya. He made an immediate impact in first-class cricket. On his Ranji Trophy debut for Meghalaya in December 2019 he took nine wickets and also scored 61 runs, followed by an eight-wicket haul in his next match. Across the 2019–20 Ranji Trophy season he finished with 55 wickets and 603 runs from nine matches, statistics that rank among the best all-round seasonal performances in the tournament’s history.
Sanjay has represented teams at the domestic and franchise levels, including Tamil Nadu, Meghalaya, VB Kanchi Veerans (TNPL), Kolkata Knight Riders (IPL), and Sunrisers Hyderabad (IPL). Sunrisers Hyderabad acquired him ahead of the 2020 IPL season.
Playing style and achievements
As an all-rounder, Sanjay combines left-handed batting with slow left-arm orthodox bowling. His debut Ranji match produced one of the more remarkable bowling figures by an Indian on first-class debut, and his 2019–20 Ranji season is notable for both high wicket and run tallies. He has played match-winning roles with both bat and ball in domestic limited-overs cricket as well, including a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy performance where he restricted Mumbai with the ball and then contributed a crucial innings to chase down the target.
Public profile
Sanjay is unmarried and was based in Hosur as his hometown while pursuing his cricket career. He lists Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin among his favourite cricketers. His physical profile is listed at around 180 cm (about 5'11") and he is described as having black hair and black eyes.
Family and personal life
Sanjay’s family includes his father Ram Singh Yadav, mother Maya Devi, and brother Sonu, who has also played cricket for Tamil Nadu at various levels. The brothers have faced each other in regional competitions. Sanjay has said that cricket opened educational opportunities for him, earning him a place at Loyola College in Chennai.
Latest updates
Sanjay’s breakthrough in first-class cricket during the 2019–20 Ranji Trophy established him as one of domestic cricket’s notable all-round performers that season. His performances attracted attention from IPL franchises, and Sunrisers Hyderabad purchased him ahead of the 2020 IPL campaign.
His coach remains M. Premnath, whose early support helped sustain Sanjay’s training when financial barriers arose.
