Early life and background

Masood Shahrukh Khan was born on 27 May 1995 in Chennai and grew up in Velachery, a neighbourhood of the city. He attended Don Bosco School and St. Bede’s in Chennai before studying at Guru Nanak College. His father, Masood Khan, played club cricket in Chennai’s second division and his mother, Lubina Khan, runs a boutique. He has a younger brother, Akram Khan, who is also a cricketer.

Shahrukh picked up an interest in cricket around the age of 11; before then he enjoyed swimming. He trained at the SDAT Academy and Kedar Cricket Academy in Chennai and began playing league cricket from the age of 13, progressing through Tamil Nadu’s age-group structure.

Career

Shahrukh Khan is a right-handed batter and bowls right-arm offbreak. He made his List-A debut for Tamil Nadu in the 2013–14 Vijay Hazare Trophy on 27 February 2014 and later made his first-class debut on 6 December 2018 in the 2018–19 Ranji Trophy. He featured strongly in under-19 competitions, notably scoring 624 runs and taking 18 wickets in the Cooch Behar Trophy, and won the best all-rounder award at the inaugural Junior Chennai Super Kings tournament.

In domestic T20 cricket he began appearing in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2014 and established himself further through performances in state and local leagues. He played for teams including Tamil Nadu, Lyca Kovai Kings, Madurai Super Giant, Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans, and captained Lyca Kovai Kings in the 2021 Tamil Nadu Premier League. Shahrukh was part of the Tamil Nadu side that won the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2021, an unbeaten campaign that delivered the state its second title in the tournament’s history.

His rise to the Indian Premier League involved earlier trials and auctions. After going unsold in the 2020 IPL auction and missing a Mumbai Indians trial cut due to an injured finger, he attracted major interest the following year. Punjab Kings secured him in the 2021 auction for Rs. 5.25 crore after competitive bidding. He received his maiden IPL cap from Chris Gayle and was retained by Punjab for the 2023 season. In the 2022 auction he was bought by Punjab for Rs. 9 crore. On 19 December 2023 he was sold to Gujarat Titans for Rs. 7.40 crore in the 2024 IPL auction; his base price at that auction was Rs. 40 lakh.

Shahrukh is noted for powerful hitting against pace and for his finishing ability in the lower order. Senior figures in Indian cricket have likened elements of his game to the early days of Kieron Pollard for his ability to clear the boundary. He has also been one of two standby players named to India’s T20I squad for the home series against the West Indies in January 2022.
