Early life and background

Shraddha Pandit was born on 4 July 1982 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, and grew up in a family steeped in Indian classical and film music. Her father, Vishwaraj Pandit, is a musician and tabla player, and her mother is Swarna Pandit. Music ran in earlier generations as well: her grandfather Pandit Pratap Narayan taught her Hindustani classical music and inspired her to pursue singing. The extended family includes noted figures such as Pandit Jasraj (granduncle), Jatin and Lalit Pandit (uncles), Vijayta and Sulakshana Pandit (aunts) and the late Aadesh Shrivastava (uncle by marriage). Her siblings include actor Yash Pandit and singer Shweta Pandit.

Shraddha began working very young and was already recording as a child. She received early training at home and in studios she frequented with her family, and she cites spiritual beliefs and visits to places such as Vrindavan as part of her personal life. She studied at Mithibai College in Mumbai.

Career

Shraddha’s professional debut as a playback singer came in 1998 with the film Khamoshi: The Musical. Although she recorded from an early age, her wider recognition grew after songs in the late 1990s and 2000s, including a breakthrough track for the film Sangharsh (1999). Over the years she has contributed vocals to many mainstream Hindi films: notable credits in her catalogue include songs from Khoobsurat (1999), Delhi-6 (2009), Band Baaja Baaraat (2010), Ladies vs Ricky Bahl (2011), Satyagraha (2013) and Bareilly Ki Barfi (2017).

In addition to singing, Shraddha has worked as a composer and lyricist. Her composing debut was a remix titled I Got That Poison for the film Hisss (2010). She has penned lyrics for songs released in recent years, including Date Kar Le (2020), Nawazishein (2022) and Biraj Mein Jhoom (2022). She has collaborated with many well-known musicians across genres, including A. R. Rahman, Salim–Sulaiman, Kailash Kher, Amit Trivedi, Sonu Nigam and Badshah, and she has performed in numerous concerts, often alongside Salim–Sulaiman.

Her career has not been without challenges. She has spoken about difficulties early on when some composers were reluctant to work with her because she came from a family of established singers.
