Shreyas Gopal (Cricketer) Biography
Ramaswamy Shreyas Gopal is an Indian cricketer from Bengaluru known for his right-arm leg-spin and useful lower-order batting. A product of Karnataka youth
Early life and backgroundRamaswamy Shreyas Gopal was born on 4 September 1993 in Bengaluru, Karnataka. He grew up in the city that remains his hometown and completed his schooling at Frank Anthony Public School in Bengaluru before moving on to Jain University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in commerce. Raised in a sporting household, his father Gopal Ramaswamy played cricket and later worked as director of a sports management firm, while his mother Amitha Ramaswamy was a volleyball player.
Career
Shreyas Gopal developed through Karnataka's age-group structure, captaining the state at under-13, under-15, under-16 and under-19 levels. A right-arm leg-break bowler and right-handed batsman, he modelled aspects of his bowling on Anil Kumble and cites Kumble and Rahul Dravid among his favourite cricketers.
Gopal made an immediate impact in domestic cricket. In his first-class debut season he claimed a tally of wickets that marked him out as a promising spinner, and across the 2013–14 Ranji Trophy he finished with 22 wickets at an average of 18.22, contributing significantly to Karnataka's campaign. In the 2014–15 Ranji season he also showed his batting capabilities, scoring 693 runs in 13 matches at an average above 46, including two centuries and three fifties.
A defining moment in his career came in February 2014 when he produced a hat-trick while representing Karnataka in the Irani Cup — a first in the history of that fixture. That period elevated his profile and drew attention from Indian Premier League franchises.
In the IPL auction that followed, Anil Kumble's recommendation helped Gopal attract interest from Mumbai Indians, who bought him in 2014. He later joined the Rajasthan Royals in January 2018 for the IPL season. At the 2024 IPL auction held in Dubai on 19 December 2023, Gopal was again acquired by Mumbai Indians, listed at a fee of Rs. 20 lakh for the 2024 edition. He has worn the number 19 jersey in the IPL.
Public profile
Gopal keeps a profile consistent with many domestic cricketers who balance bowling craft with lower-order batting. He has said that he enjoyed watching Test cricket growing up, waking early to follow India’s matches to see players such as Rahul Dravid bat. Off the field, he reads regularly — sports biographies are a preferred genre and he has expressed admiration for Rafael Nadal’s autobiography. His favourite actor is Aamir Khan and his favourite actress is Katrina Kaif.
Personal life
Shreyas, often called Shrey, married Nikitha Shiv on 24 November 2021. The couple had announced their engagement earlier in the year, on 11 August 2021. His hobbies include reading, and he follows other sports such as badminton and roller skating.
Latest updates
Most recently, Gopal was bought by the Mumbai Indians at the 2024 IPL auction for Rs. 20 lakh, returning to the franchise that first signed him in 2014. His domestic record, highlighted by strong performances in Ranji Trophy seasons and the historic Irani Cup hat-trick, continues to define his role as a leg-spin option and useful contributor with the bat for Karnataka and IPL teams.
