Shreyas Santosh Iyer was born on 6 December 1994 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Raised in a Mangalorean family, he attended Don Bosco High School and later studied at R.A. Podar College in Mumbai. His parents are Santosh Iyer, a businessman, and Rohini Iyer. He has one sister.

Iyer’s cricketing potential was identified early. While still a child, former India cricketer and coach Pravin Amre noticed him at Shivaji Park Gymkhana in Mumbai when Iyer was 12, setting the stage for a fast-tracked domestic career.
