Shubham Dubey (Cricketer) Biography
Left-handed batter and right-arm off-break bowler from Maharashtra who rose through Vidarbha's ranks and was picked by Rajasthan Royals ahead of the 2024 I
Early life and backgroundShubham Dubey was born on 27 August 1994 in Yavatmal, Maharashtra, and grew up in Nagpur. He showed aptitude for studies in school but also played a lot of cricket as a teenager, beginning with tennis-ball games in his neighbourhood. His family includes his father, Badri Prasad Dubey, who ran a paan shop in Nagpur, and his mother Jayshree, a homemaker. He has one brother who works in the private sector. Dubey remained unmarried as of 2023.
Career
Dubey developed as a left-handed batter who also bowls right-arm off-break. Early assistance came from local advocates and teammates: he received cricket kit, equipment and dietary support from advocate Sujit Jaiswal during his formative years, and later found opportunities through contacts such as Rohit Kaisalwar and former Vidarbha wicketkeeper Aniruddha Chore. Those connections helped him move from local tennis-ball tournaments into structured club and competitive cricket.
On the domestic circuit Dubey represented several clubs, including Advocate XI Cricket Club, Eleven Star Cricket Club, Royal Cricket Association Club, Rangrez Brush and Eleven Warrior Dubai. He also played for Vidarbha at age-group level and for VCA Team Green. His List-A debut for Vidarbha came in 2021, and he later made his T20 debut for the state side.
Dubey's breakthrough performances included a strong showing in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2023, where he scored 225 runs in seven matches at an average of 73.76 and a strike rate of 187.28. One of the highlights of that campaign was an innings of 58 off 20 balls against Bengal, featuring three fours and six sixes; that knock included the joint fastest half-century recorded for Vidarbha in the tournament.
He also competed in tournaments such as the Arjun Aamdar Chashak Tournament (2019), the YSBS Gondia Tournament (2020) and the VCA T20 Tournament (2021). For local competitions he wore jersey number 27.
In the Indian Premier League auction ahead of the 2024 season, Rajasthan Royals acquired Dubey. He expressed surprise and happiness at being bought for a large sum at the auction.
Public profile
Physically, Dubey is listed at about 1.78 m (5'10") and around 70 kg. His eye colour is brown and his hair is black. He enjoys travelling, especially visits to animal parks, and spends time at the gym. His playing style is noted as left-handed batting with off-break bowling.
Coaches and mentors who featured in his journey include Rohit Kesarwar and advocate Sujit Jaiswal, the latter of whom passed away in 2021. Early in his career Dubey earned match fees playing in the Times Shield tournament in Mumbai and continued to balance paid club stints with participation in local tennis-ball competitions.
Latest updates
Dubey's performances for Vidarbha and his strong T20 statistics in 2023 led to IPL interest and eventual selection by Rajasthan Royals for the 2024 season. He continues to be associated with Vidarbha in domestic formats and with several club sides that supported his rise.
Personal notes
Family influence and early advice helped shape Dubey's approach to the game. He has spoken about learning to focus on technique rather than becoming upset by failures, guidance he received from his grandmother during his youth.
