Early life and backgroundSonam Yadav was born on 18 July 2007 in Raja Ka Taal, Firozabad, Uttar Pradesh. She grew up in Firozabad and comes from a family where both parents and siblings worked to support the household. Her father, Mukesh Yadav, and brother Aman have been part of her early cricketing story: Aman had played cricket earlier and his involvement helped spark Sonam’s interest in the game. Sonam began playing informally in local parks around age 13, often practicing and competing with boys from her neighborhood.
Career
Sonam’s formal cricket education began when her brother enrolled her at the District Cricket Academy in Firozabad. There she trained under coach Ravi Yadav and was the only girl at the academy at that time. After around a year of training she earned selection for the Uttar Pradesh Under-19 women’s side and made her state debut in 2018.
Early state-level success followed quickly. In 2018 she played a key role in a T20 final by taking three wickets to help Uttar Pradesh win the tournament, and she also made her first one-day appearance for the state that year. Her progress continued with selection for a Zonal Cricket Academy camp and then inclusion in India’s Under-19 squad for a New Zealand series, where she took six wickets in four matches.
Sonam’s left-arm slow orthodox bowling and right-handed batting earned her a spot in India’s squad for the inaugural ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup in 2023. Ahead of the tournament she attended brief training camps in Goa and Visakhapatnam. She played in six matches at the competition and finished as India’s leading wicket-taker, claiming five wickets in the tournament with one standout over in which she took two wickets conceding just one run.
Her domestic career also includes representation for the Uttar Pradesh women’s team and selection by Mumbai Indians in the Women’s Premier League auction in February 2023. She was acquired by Mumbai Indians for Rs 10 lakh.
Sonam was again part of the India Under-19 women’s team that won the T20 World Cup in 2025. Following that victory, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a cash prize of Rs. 5 crores for all members of the winning squad.
Playing style and coaching
Sonam bowls slow left-arm orthodox and bats right-handed. Initially interested in becoming a batter, coaches at her academy identified strong bowling potential and trained her in both disciplines. Her coaching support has included Ravi Yadav and Vikas Paliwal. Sonam has cited the all-round Indian cricketer Ravindra Jadeja as a player she admires, particularly for bowling accuracy and variation.
Public profile
Physically, Sonam is approximately 154 cm tall (about 5'1") with black hair and black eyes. She wears jersey number 42 when representing India. As of 2023 she was pursuing her Class 10 education. Her family includes her mother, Guddi Devi, who is a homemaker, an elder brother Aman and three elder sisters, one of whom is named Sneh Lata. Her father and brother have worked at a glass factory in Firozabad.
Awards and recognition
Sonam has been recognized at junior levels for her bowling. In 2020 she was named the best bowler of the tournament during the Under-16 Women’s Zonal League. Her international junior achievements include leading India’s wicket-taking at the 2023 Under-19 T20 World Cup and being part of the title-winning squads in both 2023 and 2025.
Latest updates
In addition to her ongoing domestic commitments with Uttar Pradesh and her stint with Mumbai Indians in the WPL, Sonam remains notable for her contributions to India’s Under-19 T20 World Cup victories. Media coverage around the 2023 World Cup included personal moments for the family, who arranged to watch her matches on a rented television.
