Early life and backgroundSteven Peter Devereux Smith was born on 2 June 1989 in Sydney, New South Wales. Raised in the Sutherland Shire, he attended Alfords Point Primary School and Menai High School. His parents are Peter and Gillian Smith, and he has an older sister, Kristie. Smith grew up playing cricket and began his early career as a spin bowler before his batting developed and became his primary strength.
Career
Smith made his international debut in 2010. He played his first Twenty20 international on 5 February 2010 against Pakistan in Melbourne, his One Day International debut followed on 19 February 2010 versus the West Indies at Melbourne, and he made his Test debut on 13 July 2010 against Pakistan at Lord's. Over the course of his career Smith featured for numerous domestic and franchise sides including New South Wales, Sutherland, Sydney Sixers, Worcestershire, Antigua Hawksbills, Pune Warriors, Rajasthan Royals, Rising Pune Supergiants and Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Primarily a batsman, Smith developed into one of Australia’s most important run-scorers. He set a record for the most runs (769) in a Test series against India during the 2014–15 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. In that series he scored centuries in the first innings of each of the four home Tests against India. He won the Allan Border Medal in 2015 and was named ICC Player of the Year and ICC Test Player of the Year that same year. Under his captaincy Australia played 64 matches, winning 32 and losing 28, and the team secured multiple championships, including two World Cup wins while he was part of the side.
Smith has also contributed with occasional leg-spin early in his career and was once the leading wicket-taker in the 2008 KFC Big Bash tournament. His development as a bowler was influenced by time spent under the instruction of Shane Warne.
A notable moment in his career was his recovery from the 2018 ball-tampering scandal, which led to cricket authorities imposing bans on members of the Australian leadership group. In limited-overs cricket, Smith played 170 ODIs and scored 5,800 runs with 12 centuries. He announced his retirement from the ODI format on 4 March 2025.
Public profile
Smith is commonly known by nicknames such as Schmidt, Smudge, Smithy and God. He wears the number 49 jersey for Australia and domestically. Standing about 175 cm tall and weighing roughly 78 kg, his physical presence is often noted alongside his left-of-centre, unorthodox batting technique. He lists Ricky Ponting and Shane Warne among his favourite cricketers and Roger Federer as a preferred tennis athlete.
Off the field, Smith enjoys photography, scuba diving and watching a range of sports including tennis, rugby and baseball. He is a fan of horse racing and holds ownership stakes in several racehorses. He also has a pet dog named Charlie.
Personal life
Smith is married to Danielle Willis; the couple wed on 15 September 2018. He identifies as Australian and follows the Christian (Catholic) faith. He has been open about his early cricketing pathway shifting from a focus on leg spin to a batting-heavy role as his strengths evolved.
Notable incidents and records
Among Smith’s career highlights are being the second-highest wicket-taker in the ICC World Cup T20 2010 and becoming the first Australian captain to begin a captaincy stint with three consecutive centuries. His 2014–15 series run tally against India remains a standout record. He was involved in a high-profile on-field controversy in March 2018 related to ball-tampering that resulted in sanctions for members of the Australian leadership group.
