Early life and backgroundKirshnik Khari Ball was born on June 18, 1994, in Lawrenceville, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta. Raised in the Atlanta area, he attended Berkmar High School and grew up immersed in the city's rap scene. He was raised by Edna Mae Burnside Marshall, who is identified as the woman who raised him in Atlanta.
Career
Takeoff started making music at a young age alongside his family. While still in high school he and his cousin Quavo formed a group originally called Polo Club; the trio became Migos when Offset joined. Migos released their first project, Juug Season, in 2011 and followed with a string of mixtapes and albums that established them in the national hip-hop landscape.
In 2012 the group issued No Label, and in 2013 they connected with Quality Control Music, the imprint that would help elevate their profile. The 2013 single Versace, released with Drake on a version of the track, helped push the group into wider recognition and appeared on the Billboard charts.
Migos continued to build commercial momentum with a series of studio albums. Yung Rich Nation arrived in 2015 and reached the Billboard 200. The 2016 single Bad and Boujee, featuring Lil Uzi Vert, became the group's first number-one on the Billboard Hot 100. Culture, released in early 2017, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and later received platinum certification; the project also earned Grammy nominations. Culture II followed in 2018 and likewise entered the Billboard 200 at number one.
As a member of Migos, Takeoff appeared across many of the group's major releases and performances. He released solo material as well, putting out projects listed under his name, and remained an active contributor to Migos' output through Culture III (2021). In October 2022, without Offset, Migos released Only Built for Infinity Links, which is identified as Takeoff's final album appearance.
Public profile
Takeoff stood about 5 feet 9 inches tall (approximately 175 cm) and was described with dark brown eyes and black hair. He was known for his steady presence in the group and for often sharing images on social media, including photographs of himself smoking cigars.
Throughout his career, Takeoff and Migos experienced public incidents that received media coverage. In 2015 the group and several associates were arrested following an incident at a university concert involving alleged possession of contraband. In 2017 he was reported removed from a flight after a confrontation with airline staff. In 2021 he faced an accusation of sexual assault; the Los Angeles District Attorney later said it would not file criminal charges, citing insufficient evidence. Takeoff's legal representatives denied the allegations and described them as untrue.
Personal life and family
Takeoff was American by nationality and identified as African-American. He was unmarried at the time of his death. His cousin Quavo was a fellow Migos member and close collaborator. Takeoff had distinctive facial tattoos, including ink referencing Edna and a butterfly on one side of his forehead, and additional tattoos on the other side of his forehead and cheek. He also collected high-end cars, including a Rolls-Royce Wraith, a Maserati GranTurismo, and an Aston Martin Vanquish.
Death and reaction
On November 1, 2022, at approximately 2:34 a.m., Takeoff was shot and killed while attending a private party in Houston, Texas. Reports said the shooting followed an argument; Houston police described the assailant as unknown and stated there was no indication Takeoff was engaged in criminal activity at the time. His death prompted widespread condolences from peers across the music industry and from public figures who remembered his contributions to hip-hop.
