Taz (Singer) Biography
Taz, born Tarsame Singh Saini, was a British singer, composer and actor from Coventry who brought Asian-fusion pop to wide audiences with his band Stereo N
Early life and backgroundTarsame Singh Saini, known professionally as Taz and occasionally credited as Taz Stereo Nation or Johnny Zee, was born on 23 May 1967 in Coventry, West Midlands, United Kingdom. Raised in a Punjabi family, he attended Stoke Park School in Coventry. Music was a constant presence in his home: he grew up listening to Punjabi and South Asian vocal traditions and later explained that those early influences shaped the direction of his work.
Career
Taz launched his recording career in 1989 with the album Hit the Deck and became best known as the lead singer of the pop project Stereo Nation, a role he began in 1996. Over the 1990s and 2000s he developed a signature Asian-fusion sound that blended Punjabi and English elements and helped introduce cross-cultural pop to audiences in India and the British Asian community.
Across a multi-decade career he released several albums, including The Remix Album (1990), Spirits of Rhythm (1994), Nasha (1999), Rewind Selekta (2009) and Desi & U Know It (2012). The track Pyar Ho Gaya from the 2000 album OH! Laila was among his charting songs. He also contributed songs to Hindi films and gained recognition through film work over many years, with recorded songs appearing in movies such as Tum Bin (a Hindi film song Daroo Vich Pyar credited in 2001), Koi... Mil Gaya (It's Magic, 2003), Race (Mujhpe To Jadoo, 2008), Guest Iin London (Daru Vich Pyaar, 2017) and Batla House (Gallan Goriyan, 2019).
Taz expanded into acting as well. He performed in English-language films, including a role as Channi Singh in Don't Stop Dreaming (2007) and an appearance in Sambar Salsa (2007).
Recognition and live performances
His work earned industry recognition, including being named Best International Act at the UK Asian Music Awards in 2005 and receiving an award as Best Punjabi Singer in the Middle East (year unspecified). He was an active live performer, appearing at stage shows and benefit concerts. Notable appearances included a fundraising performance at the Royal Albert Hall for an Afghanistan-related charity and singing at the annual gala for the Richest British Asian Awards held at the Natural History Museum in London.
Artistry and influences
Taz described himself as largely self-taught. He said his approach to composing was practical — using keyboard skills sufficient for writing music — and emphasized a soul-driven performance style. His musical roots were in Punjabi singers such as Gurdas Maan and classical South Asian vocalists, and he blended those influences with Western pop to create his fusion aesthetic. Taz credited being discovered by British pop musician Neville Staples, who heard him singing while he was working in his father's shop and helped him record early demos.
Public profile
Taz stood about 168 cm (5 ft 6 in) tall and had brown eyes; his hair was often dyed blonde. He was a dog owner who kept a pet named Kovu and performed regularly at commercial and charitable events. His public persona included occasional references to social drinking at parties and industry functions.
Personal life
Taz was married and had three children: two daughters, Simran and Serina (the latter was noted as a singer), and a son named Dan. He had a brother, Tarlochan, and a sister, Kuldip. He held British nationality and identified with his Punjabi heritage.
Health and death
Taz's health declined following a hernia operation that was delayed during the COVID-19 pandemic. He experienced worsening complications in 2021, including a period in a coma from which he later recovered. In March 2022 his condition again deteriorated and he died on 29 April 2022 after a prolonged illness. He was 54 at the time of his death.
Latest updates
Although no posthumous releases are listed here, Taz's catalogue of fusion pop and his contributions to film soundtracks remain part of his legacy. His body of work is remembered for bringing Punjabi-inflected pop to international audiences and for his role leading Stereo Nation.
