Early life and background

Tom William Hartley was born on 3 May 1999 in Ormskirk, Lancashire. Raised in a family that runs Hartley Nurseries, he grew up in a sporting household: his father, Bill (William John) Hartley, is a retired athlete. Hartley attended Merchant Taylors' School in Crosby, a school noted for its cricketing culture, where his focus shifted decisively toward cricket after an earlier spell playing football in a youth academy.

Career

Hartley progressed through Lancashire's age-group structure, representing the county at Under-15, Under-17 and Under-19 levels before moving into Lancashire's Second XI. He played club cricket for Ormskirk Cricket Club from 2013 and spent time playing overseas in Australia, including a stint with The Butchers Cricket Club in the Northern Districts tournament.

He signed his first professional contract with Lancashire in March 2019 and made his first-class debut on 1 August 2020 in the Bob Willis Trophy. Later that month he appeared in the T20 Blast for Lancashire.
