Yashpal Sharma (Cricketer) Biography

Yashpal Sharma was an Indian middle-order batsman best known as a member of India’s 1983 World Cup-winning side. His domestic career included stints with P

Early life and background

Yashpal Sharma was born on 11 August 1954 in Ludhiana, Punjab. He first came to notice as a schoolboy cricketer in Punjab, where a prolific innings in 1972 drew attention and helped propel him into state‑level cricket. Standing around 1.75 m tall, he batted right‑handed and bowled right‑arm medium pace.

Career

Sharma progressed through the domestic ranks, representing Punjab and later Haryana as well as the Railways team. He made a strong impression in inter‑zonal and representative fixtures: a big score in the Duleep Trophy for North Zone and a near‑century in the Irani Trophy were among the performances that led to international selection.

He made his One Day International debut for India on 13 October 1978 on a tour of Pakistan and his Test debut followed on 2 August 1979 during the England tour. Early overseas tours included a productive stay in England in 1979 during which he scored heavily in tour matches. His first Test century came against Australia at Kanpur in 1980, and he also recorded a double century at first‑class level in a match against a visiting Victoria side.

Yashpal was part of the India squad that won the 1983 Cricket World Cup. He was one of India’s leading run‑scorers in that tournament, finishing with 240 runs in eight matches and playing a key role in India’s victory over the West Indies. Injuries and a run of less successful international outings later restricted his place in the national side; his final Test appearance was on 3 November 1983 against the West Indies and his last ODI came on 27 January 1985 against England.

After leaving the Punjab side in 1988, he represented Haryana and eventually retired from playing in 1993. Following retirement he remained active in cricket in several capacities: he served as an umpire for a period, joined the national selection committee in 2003, and after a brief removal in 2005 was reappointed to the selection panel in 2008, serving until 2011. During his post‑playing career he also coached the Uttar Pradesh Ranji Trophy team and in 2019 was named by the Delhi and Districts Cricket Association as a member of a Cricket Advisory Committee alongside fellow 1983 World Cup winner Sunil Valson.

Public profile

Sharma was widely remembered for his role in India’s 1983 triumph and remained a visible figure in Indian cricket through selection, coaching and advisory roles. He appeared publicly with his 1983 teammates on television and participated in events celebrating that side. He was described as a fitness‑conscious teetotaller who followed a vegetarian diet. His family life included his wife, Renu Sharma, and children: a son, Chirag Sharma, and daughters Puja Sharma and Preeti Sharma.

Latest updates

Yashpal Sharma passed away on 13 July 2021 in New Delhi at the age of 66. Reports at the time cited cardiac arrest as the cause of death. News of his death prompted condolences from many in the cricket community. The 2019 appointment to the DDCA’s Cricket Advisory Committee was among his more recent formal roles in the game prior to his passing.
