Early life and background

Yuzvendra Singh Chahal was born on 23 July 1990 in Jind, Haryana. He grew up in that town, attended DAV Public School, Jind, and developed interests in both chess and cricket from a young age. As a child he competed successfully in chess, becoming India’s national junior champion in the under-12 category and representing the country at an international event in Greece in 2003. Financial challenges in pursuing chess professionally helped steer him toward a focus on cricket.

Chahal’s family includes his father K. K. Chahal, who worked as an advocate, his mother Sunita Devi and two older sisters. He is Indian by nationality and follows Hinduism. Physically, he is listed at about 5 feet 6 inches (168 cm) tall and around 60 kg (132 lbs), with brown eyes and black hair.

Career

Chahal started his first-class career in November 2009, making his debut against Madhya Pradesh in Indore. Early in his cricketing journey he began as a medium-fast bowler but later converted to leg-spin, the skill that came to define him as a bowler. A notable turning point in his career was his performance in the 2013 Champions League T20, which helped raise his profile.

Domestically he has represented Haryana and, in the Indian Premier League, spent his initial years with Mumbai Indians before moving to Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2014. His time with RCB brought him into the spotlight: he became the team’s highest wicket taker in 2015 and eventually became the first IPL player to reach 200 wickets. Internationally, Chahal made his ODI debut for India on 11 June 2016 against Zimbabwe in Harare and his T20 international debut on 18 June 2016, also against Zimbabwe in Harare. In April 2025, playing for Punjab Kings against Chennai Super Kings, he achieved a notable bowling performance: four wickets for 32 runs in an over that included a hat-trick — his second hat-trick in IPL history and the first since the 2023 season — becoming the second bowler after Yuvraj Singh to record two IPL hat-tricks.
