I understand the excitement of building your first home server, but the effort needed to clean up easily avoidable mistakes can turn the experience into a nightmare. In my case, I had misconfigured my firewall and got locked out of my own server, and this was just one of several frustrating moments. I didn’t have to restart the build from scratch; however, it took hours of research and retracing my steps.
I finally got through all these mistakes and got my server up and running. The experience showed me the most common errors that make beginners lose time, many of which are avoidable.
I didn’t think through my hardware choices
Overbuying and underplanning will waste money and performance
It’s easy to start stressing out over specs because, with the right CPU, RAM, and storage, you can future-proof your setup. On the surface, this seems logical, but if you’re not sure what the server will run, you’ll end up paying for performance it doesn’t need.
The server’s end goal should guide your hardware choice. In fact, several setups will work fine on an old, repurposed laptop.

It’s also important to remember that your server runs 24/7, so you must take into account the power cost. Calculate power cost as watts × hours × your electricity rate (convert watts to kilowatts (kW) if your electricity rate is per kWh, e.g., (watts / 1000) × hours × rate).
You should also be wary of the SMR drive trap. While they work well for light use, SMR drives aren’t well-suited to rebuilds or sustained write workloads. It’s also wise to label drives before using them to avoid guesswork when you need to take them out, especially if something goes wrong.

The OS shapes more of your server experience than you might expect. It determines how you install apps and the ease of failure recovery. It also affects how easy it will be to rebuild the server if needed. The common options differ in specific ways:

Regardless of the setup, you will have to figure out a lot on your own. I avoided installing Docker incorrectly, but I’ve seen many users run into permission and file-path issues when using the Snap package on Ubuntu
Additionally, don’t fall into the temptation of distro-hopping the moment something doesn’t work. The problem is not always the distro. Some patience in learning it deeply enough will pay off.

I quickly learned that it makes no sense to assign static IPs directly to a server. The server will become unreachable when you change networks or routers, and the old IP doesn’t match the new setup. Using DHCP reservations on the router is cleaner. It’s easier to manage and update, and you still get a consistent IP address.
Then I messed up my firewall, and one wrong rule locked me out. I easily resolved it because I could physically access the machine. Still, I learned a lot from it. I now avoid making remote changes to the firewall, and I always test firewall changes on a local or non-production machine, rebooting only when I have physical access or a recovery plan. Whatever you do, make sure you have a way back in.
Port forwarding carries risk, even if it seems like an easy way to enable remote access. It leaves your ports exposed in places where they can be scanned by bots. The option I settled on was Tailscale, which allows remote access without port forwarding. WireGuard is another option that comes with more control, but only if you’re ready to put in the effort to configure it.
Here are additional mistakes you should avoid:
- Leaving default passwords
- Exposing admin dashboards publicly
- Exposing the Docker socket to containers
The problem with network mistakes is that their repercussions can be catastrophic: you can break or expose everything.
I thought my setup was safe
What RAID and assumptions don’t protect you from

Even if you believe every element of your setup is stable, don’t ignore backups. The illusion of stability doesn’t last — it certainly didn’t for me. RAID primarily protects against certain disk failures, not against accidental deletion, corruption, or other system-level failures.
You’ve likely heard about the 3-2-1 rule. It’s very popular because it’s effective. You should have three copies, including an original and two backups, on two media types (different storage types) and one offsite (not at home).
A second drive inside the same machine does not count as offsite — if the machine is stolen, catches fire, or dies from a power surge, both copies go with it.
Even if you don’t back up everything, don’t skip configuration files, Docker volumes, and personal data. I’ve lost a lot during what I thought was a simple migration. But even after backing up, if you do not test and simply assume all is well, that could be the costliest mistake.

When I set up my first home server, I was searching for fixes and configurations on the fly, but I wasn’t documenting them. This eventually made me spend twice as much effort. I was forgetting a lot, and when something broke, I had to start searching all over again for solutions.
The reality is that even if it feels fresh, it only takes a few weeks for you to forget the exact steps. For me, it became hard to recall why I chose certain settings and where some ports were mapped.
When documenting, aim to ensure the documentation outlives your server. At a minimum, document your IP assignments, Docker configs, the commands you ran, and the problems you solved.
Plan it through before you build it
Building a home server is fun, but you must have everything well-thought-out before you start. A server can be complex, but rushing decisions you don’t fully understand yet will make it worse. Slowing it down at the start can save you from having to fix things later and make the process more enjoyable.
