Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord
Get primed before The Mandalorian & Grogu
Disney will never allow people to spend too much time away from the Star Wars universe. Its latest effort is Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord, an animated series that follows Sith Lord Darth Maul as he rebuilds his criminal syndicate. For those who assumed that Darth Maul died back in 2001’s The Phantom Menace, he was brought back in animated form in shows like The Clone War and Star Wars Rebels, both the brainchildren of Dave Filoni. Shadow Lord, which is set after The Clone Wars but before Rebels, is the latest entry in that series.
These animated Star Wars shows built a reputation for having heart, action, and solid character drama. And now that Filoni is replacing Kathleen Kennedy at the head of Lucasfilm, his ideas are bleeding more and more into the live-action Star Wars movies. For instance, he has a large hand in the upcoming movie The Mandalorian & Grogu.
Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord will release two episodes at a time, starting April 6 on Disney+. There are 10 episodes in all, so the season will run through May 4, just a couple weeks before The Mandalorian & Grogu lands in theaters on May 22.

The Boys Season 5
The big finish
The Boys premiered back in 2019, when everyone was obsessed with the squeaky clean Marvel Cinematic Universe and needed an alternative. The Boys is set in a world full of superheroes, but a lot of them are narcissistic, bloodthirsty monsters more interested in personal glory than saving people. The worst of them is Homelander (Anthony Starr), who at the end of season 4 has effectively taken over the United States. The fifth and final season will bring him into conflict with Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) and his team of anti-superhero freedom fighters. We don’t know exactly how it’s all gonna end, but we know it’ll be bloody.
The Boys season 5 is probably the biggest thing coming out on TV in April. The first two episodes drop on Prime Video on April 8. After that, episodes come out one per week. There are eight total this season.

The Testaments
The Handmaid’s Tale continues
The Handmaid’s Tale, based on Margaret Atwood’s novel, was a drama about a world plagued by infertility. A religious autocracy takes over the United States and forces those few women who are still capable of bearing children into slavery as “handmaids.” That show ran for six seasons on Hulu and ended with hero June (Elizabeth Moss) escaping to freedom. Spinoff The Testaments will follow her daughter (Chase Infiniti), who is being trained at a school for handmaids. But like her mother, she’s going to push back against the oppressive society.
There are 10 episodes in the first season of The Testaments. The first three will drop all at once on Hulu on April 8 and come out one per week after that.

The Miniature Wife
Honey, I Shrunk You
The Miniature Wife looks like it could be very trite or very charming. It’s a sci-fi comedy about a scientist (Succession’s Matthew Macfadyen) who accidentally shrinks his wife (Elizabeth Banks) in one of his experiments. Can they manage to return her to normal size before time runs out?
The Miniature Wife looks like an easy-to-watch, lightweight good time. It’s hard to do sci-fi comedy well — Murderbot is a recent example of a show that got it pretty right — but hopefully this show can thread the needle.

From Season 4
The best horror show no one is watching
From is a horror show about a seemingly ordinary town with a strange secret: once you enter it, you can’t leave. And at night weird monsters come out and try to kill you. Drive around this place if you can.
From is one of the best shows on TV that no one is watching. For three seasons now, it’s introduced us to a variety of fascinating characters trying to untangle the mystery of the town where they’re trapped, and this next season looks like it’s going to ramp up to some answers. The lack of hype around From probably has something to do with the fact that it airs on little-known streaming service MGM+, but if you’re able to check it out, you’ll be rewarded with a spine-tingling good time.
There are 10 episodes in From’s fourth season. They start on MGM+ on April 19.

Stranger Things: Tales from ’85
Are you ready to be hurt again?
Stranger Things ended its five-season run on Netflix back in December amidst a storm of controversy, but enough time may have passed for people to want to check out this animated spinoff, which is set between seasons 2 and 3 of the original show. It will feature familiar characters like Eleven, Jim Hopper, Lucas, and others fighting a supernatural menace we just didn’t hear about on the main show. Some of the characters are voiced by their actors from the original series, although others have new voices.
All 10 episodes of Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 drop on Netflix on April 23.
