Early life and background

Payal Nair grew up in New Delhi where she attended The Frank Anthony Public School. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in European History from Jesus and Mary College in New Delhi and also completed a part-time course in mass communication at the YMCA, New Delhi. Active in drama from an early age, she served as president of her college dramatics society and began formal theatre work through workshops at the YMCA.

Her childhood interest in performance was encouraged by her family. She is an only child, follows Hinduism, and is described as a non-vegetarian. Physically, she is about 165 cm tall and has black eyes and hair. She has a sun tattoo near her collarbones and keeps a pet parrot named Mithu.

Career

Payal Nair began her on-screen career in the mid-1990s, debuting on television before moving into films. Early TV credits include Agwaah (1996) and two 1998 appearances on the procedural series C.I.D. Her first film appearances came around 2000 with roles in Jungle and Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar!!, and she continued to work across both mediums in the following years.

Her first lead role on television arrived in 2002 with the Sony show Goonj Ateet Ki, in which she played a doctor named Revathi. She gained wider recognition in 2004 when she took the title role in the DD National soap Meher, also portraying a lookalike double in the series. That period led to further prominent television assignments: a negative turn in Saat Phere: Saloni Ka Safar (2005), multiple parts on the long-running Star Plus serial Bhabhi (2005–2007), and supporting roles in shows such as Parrivaar, Chhoona Hai Aasmaan and Do Saheliyaan… Kismat Ki Kathputaliyaan.

Payal has combined serial work with theatre and film. Her filmography includes Kuch Tum Kaho Kuch Hum Kahein (2002), Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai (2010) and a role in the 2020 biographical film Chhapaak. On stage, she has both performed and continued to study. She spent extended periods training in physical theatre at the Dell’Arte International School and has trained under theatre practitioners including Amal Allana and Ranjit Kapoor. Her theatre appearances include the play Jaise Kitabon Mein Mile and the 2019 production Mengoubi-The Fair One.

Beyond acting, she has taken creative and production responsibilities. Since 2010 she has worked as a creative producer at Soul Curry Movies. She has also appeared in teleplays and anthology projects, ranging from the Tata Sky Theatre production Seven to episodic work in horror and short-format series.
