Early life and background

Sindhu Menon was born on 17 June 1985 in Bengaluru, Karnataka. Though raised in Bengaluru, she comes from a Malayali family with roots in Kerala. From an early age she trained in Bharatanatyam and won several school-level competitions for her dance, an experience that played a role in her introduction to the film industry.

Career

Sindhu first appeared on screen as a child artist. A Bharatanatyam competition judge noticed her performance and connected her with director K. V. Jayaram, who cast her as the young Rashmi in the Kannada film Rashmi (1994). As she grew older she moved into leading roles and was signed as the heroine in the Kannada film Prema Prema Prema (1999) when she was about 13.

After establishing herself in Kannada cinema, Sindhu expanded into other South Indian film industries. She made appearances in Telugu, Malayalam and Tamil films during the early 2000s. Her Telugu debut came with Bhadrachalam (2001), she appeared in the Malayalam film Uthaman (2001), and she acted in the Tamil film Samuthiram (2001). Across these projects she performed a variety of roles and also executed action-oriented riding sequences herself on a Royal Enfield Bullet when the scripts required it.

Sindhu is multilingual and is reported to be fluent in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, English and Kannada, a practical asset for working across regional film industries. Alongside acting, she maintained a public persona that included a fondness for long motorcycle rides.
